English Linguistics

The focus area English Linguistics provides an in-depth exploration of the English language through multiple lenses, including its structure, use, and variation. Students engage with a variety of modules that examine key concepts in linguistics, the relationship between language and the mind, and how language operates within different social contexts. Modules like Writing Skills and Popular Culture and Language Skills for Teachers connect linguistic theory with practical applications, including the teaching of English and the analysis of language in cultural contexts. The focus on sociolinguistics, with courses such as Language, Interaction, Society: Focus on Sociolinguistics, emphasizes how social factors influence language variation and change. Additionally, students explore the dynamics of English language structure and its evolving forms in modules like Analysing English: Structure and Variation and Change. This focus area fosters both a theoretical understanding and practical skills in English linguistics, preparing students for a range of academic and professional paths.
