Indo-European Studies
The focus area Indo-European Linguistics provides graduates with a deep understanding of the linguistic, historical, and cultural dimensions of ancient Indo-European languages. Students gain expertise in historical linguistics, acquiring the skills to explore language evolution through both qualitative and quantitative methods. They learn how to reconstruct the ancestor states of language families and investigate the dynamics of language change. Additionally, they develop proficiency in data acquisition techniques, including working with written records and linguistic elicitation, and are trained in statistical analysis and the processing of large linguistic corpora. Graduates also acquire basic programming skills tailored to linguistic data processing, preparing them to engage with modern computational approaches in linguistics. The focus area offers a comprehensive approach to the study of Indo-European languages, preparing students for advanced research roles and further academic pursuits, such as PhD programs in linguistics.
